53 Civilians Killed in Drone Strike on Abyei Market
· Source: Algeria Now
A drone strike on Monday killed 53 civilians and severely wounded 27 more at a market in the disputed Abyei region on the Sudan‑South Sudan border.
The attack was carried out by Sudanese army aircraft that dropped approximately 22 munitions on the market, which sits in a zone controlled by the Rapid Support Forces (FSR).
Abyei, overseen by a United Nations interim security force, serves as a key trade hub for goods destined for western Kordofan, an area under FSR control.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry responded by summoning the Sudan ambassador and issuing a condemnation of the strike.
The incident underscores the volatility of the border region and raises concerns about civilian safety in markets that function as vital economic centres.
