78 grain‑seed centers open across Algeria for 2026‑27 sowing campaign

Seventy‑eight centers of the Algerian Professional Grain Office opened today across wilayas to support the 2026‑2027 plowing and sowing campaign.

The centers, staffed by grain and dry‑legume cooperative representatives, the Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development and the National Fund for Agricultural Cooperation, aim to simplify administrative and financing procedures, Mohamed Saadawi, media officer of the Office, said.

High farmer turnout followed recent rains, and operations that began in July during the harvest period are now moving into the main sowing phase, which normally starts in late September and early October.

Seed needs for the season are estimated at 2.5 million quintals of soft and hard wheat, barley and triticale, while current stock stands at 3.5 million quintals, ensuring the country’s self‑sufficiency in grain seeds since 1995.

Farmers can finance purchases through self‑financing, the “Rafiq” loan from the Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development “Badr” available at each center, or the “Mowared” loan for climate‑affected or bank‑loan‑constrained producers, repayable from harvest under provincial committees.

Twenty new seed‑production stations will be received, adding to the existing 100 stations, further bolstering the national seed supply chain.
