Ouacim Kouidri announced on 20 October 2026 that Algeria has adopted its first national essential medicines list, a step aimed at guiding local production and securing priority treatments.

The list, created by a committee set up on 23 April 2026 at the Ministry of Health headquarters, evaluates medicines using scientific and technical criteria and takes into account the evolution of diseases in Algeria. It will serve as a reference for national availability priorities and is expected to strengthen domestic production capacities.

While the new list does not alter patient reimbursement policies, it aligns with the national production and import programme to meet real therapeutic needs and will direct investments toward priority medicines for health and strategic export plans.

Officials say the list is also intended to support the export of pharmaceutical products and medical devices, complementing the World Health Organization’s model essential medicines list, which is updated every two years.
