Algeria and the Czech Republic signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday creating a joint business council aimed at doubling bilateral economic cooperation.
The signing ceremony in Algiers was led by Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb and Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who arrived that morning with a ministerial delegation and several economic operators.
The memorandum also covers cooperation in civil protection, geology and cinematography, expanding the scope of partnership beyond trade.
Prime Minister Ghrieb said the two countries must double efforts and explore new cooperation areas, noting that trade rose from about US$139 million in 2024 to nearly US$323 million in 2025 but remains below its potential. He listed priority investment sectors as industry, automotive components, agriculture, agri‑food, pharmaceuticals, renewables, mining, tourism, maritime fishing, the digital economy and ICT.
Babiš described Algeria as a key North African partner, the largest African country and a dynamic market that links Europe and Africa. He highlighted Algeria’s contribution to European energy security, citing the ČEZ‑Sonatrach partnership and ongoing geological cooperation as concrete examples.
