Algeria Arrests 61 Moroccan Nationals Over Planned Sabotage Plot
· Source: Algeria Now
Algerian authorities detained 61 Moroccan nationals in Oran in early October, accusing them of planning sabotage against the country's security and public order. The arrests follow the dismantling of a network that entered Algeria via Tunisia, crossed the El Kala and El Tarf regions, and reached Oran.
Among those seized was a former Moroccan army officer. Police confiscated passports, Moroccan dirhams and euros, and are now conducting judicial proceedings to establish each suspect's role and any links to the alleged attacks.
The operation comes after Algeria reinstated a visa requirement for Moroccan passport holders on 26 September 2026. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said the measure targets security concerns rather than limiting legitimate travel.
Algerian security agencies have repeatedly warned that the Moroccan monarchy, known as the Makhzen, exploits visa exemptions for espionage, drug and human trafficking, smuggling and illegal immigration. The latest arrests echo a 2024 case in Tlemcen, where seven alleged spies, including four Moroccans, remain in pre‑trial detention.
