Algeria Calls for Two Permanent African Seats on UN Security Council
· Source: Algeria Now
Algeria’s UN ambassador urged a "speedy" overhaul of the Security Council on Thursday, pressing for at least two permanent African seats with full veto rights.
Speaking in New York during the 81st UN General Assembly, Ambassador Ammar Ben Jameh warned that "we cannot overstate the urgency of Security Council reform" and highlighted Africa’s historic under‑representation.
Ben Jameh cited the "Future Charter" roadmap for UN modernization as evidence that reform is needed now, and demanded five additional non‑permanent seats for the continent.
Algeria reiterated its firm support for Africa’s legitimate aspirations for full, fair representation in the Security Council, echoing the ambassador’s call that "Africa must obtain at least two permanent seats with full rights, including the veto".
The proposal will be taken up in upcoming UN discussions, where member states will debate the scope and timeline of any changes to the Council’s composition.
