Algeria claims self‑sufficiency in most processed food products

Algerian Foreign Trade Minister Kamel Rezig announced on Saturday that the country now meets the majority of its demand for processed food items that were previously imported. Speaking at the opening of the "Made in Algeria" fair in Blida’s Mustapha Tchaker sports complex, Rezig said national production has replaced foreign imports for most food‑processing categories since around 2020, following President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s policy drive.

The fair, running until 20 October, showcases about one hundred public and private operators involved in dairy, beverages, pasta, confectionery, cooking oil and other processing sectors. Stalls display the breadth of domestic know‑how, while public support agencies, banks and insurers provide information on financing options for manufacturers.

The event was attended by Blida governor Djamel Eddine Hashas and diplomatic delegations from roughly twenty countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Yemen, Italy, Bulgaria, Norway, Mali, Brazil and China. Organisers hope the presence of foreign buyers will foster partnerships, expand distribution channels and promote Algerian brands abroad.

Rezig highlighted that an increasing number of Algerian firms are now targeting export markets and seeking to establish a lasting presence overseas. The ministry plans to assist these companies, in coordination with other government bodies, to reach as many destinations as possible. He also noted that Algerian products are already circulating in Europe, Africa and the Arab world, crediting compliance with quality standards for this success.
