Algeria Extends Mandatory National Service to Citizens Abroad
· Source: Algeria Now
All Algerian citizens aged 19 and over are now required to perform national service, even if they reside outside the country, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The rule applies alongside the annual recensement, which obliges every citizen turning 17 between 2 January and 30 September to register. Consular offices worldwide handle registration for the diaspora, processing suspensions, exemptions and duplicate records.
A suspension permits postponement of service while a citizen is engaged in studies or training and can be renewed until the programme is completed. However, an exemption is not granted to graduates who enrol in a programme of the same or lower level.
Binational applicants must file a declaration of option together with a service certificate. In Paris, the consulate requires a birth certificate, Algerian identity card, consular card, residence permit, school certificate or proof of activity, and four photographs.
For minors, a legal guardian may register on their behalf, providing the guardian’s identity document and a copy of the family book. All matters are dealt with by the legal and social section of each consulate.
The procedures are ongoing requirements; no specific future dates have been announced for implementation.
