Algeria's national futsal side were eliminated from the 2026 African Futsal Championship after a 3-2 defeat to Angola in the semi-final on Saturday. The hosts had taken a 2-0 lead into the break but were unable to hold on, conceding three unanswered goals in the second half.
Angola, who are aiming for a second consecutive continental final, featured a standout player known as Jo Mahrez. The 28-year-old forward, whose full name is João Josemar Cambangula, currently plays for Inter Movistar in Spain and holds the record for most UEFA Futsal Champions League titles.
Cambangula, a right‑footed player, chose the nickname Jo Mahrez as a tribute to former Algerian international Riyad Mahrez, whom he admired during Mahrez's spells at Leicester City and Manchester City. The homage was highlighted on his jersey, where the letters H and R appeared reversed.
The loss marks Algeria's first appearance at the tournament and, despite the defeat, the team's performance was praised as a significant achievement for a sport that remains marginal in the country.
