Algeria Introduces Visa‑on‑Arrival for Sahara Tours via Approved Agencies

Since 2023 Algeria has allowed foreign tourists to obtain a visa‑on‑arrival for trips to the Grand Sud, provided the journey is organised through a Ministry‑approved Algerian travel agency. The scheme, aimed at boosting desert tourism, issues a "regularisation" visa that covers the length of the organised circuit, up to a maximum of 30 days.

Travelers must book a tour that includes at least one of the 24 eligible southern wilayas – popular choices include Djanet and the Tassili n'Ajjer, Tamanrasset and the Hoggar, or Timimoun. The agency submits the passport copy, itinerary and application form on the tourism ministry’s digital platform, ideally weeks before departure, and receives an electronic boarding authorisation with a QR code to present to the airline.

Upon arrival, border police verify the QR authorisation and passport before issuing the visa. The visitor then pays the stamp fee, either by receipt or fiscal stamps, the amount varying with the circuit’s duration. The visa is valid only for the scheduled tour and cannot be used for stays in Algiers, Oran or Constantine, where a consular visa remains required.

Dual nationals travelling on an Algerian passport are exempt from any visa. The programme is subject to change, with possible adjustments to required documents and fees, so travellers are advised to confirm details with the accredited agency or an Algerian consulate before booking.
