Algeria launches national flu vaccination drive ahead of winter peak

The Ministry of Health launched the national influenza vaccination campaign on 27 October, targeting people aged 65 and over, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, pilgrims, health workers and individuals with severe obesity.

Institut Pasteur d’Algérie director‑general Fawzi Derrar warned that immunity develops about three weeks after injection, so postponing vaccination to January would miss the period of highest virus circulation.

The campaign aims to limit severe flu complications and avoid overload of hospitals during winter and has mobilised more than two million doses for the 2026‑2027 season.

So far, 1.6 million doses have been sent to local health centres and hospitals. The vaccine is produced locally through a partnership between Saidal and Abbott.

Officials say the early start should protect vulnerable groups before the peak and relieve pressure on the health system throughout the winter months.
