Algeria has achieved self‑sufficiency in hard wheat and barley for the 2025/2026 season, with national grain output hitting 33‑35 million quintals, well above the 23‑26 million quintals needed domestically.

The surplus results from balanced rainfall, improved technical practices and intensive farmer effort, despite an early shortage of harvesting machinery in the western highland wilayas that was later resolved.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune personally intervened during the harvest, averting what officials described as potentially catastrophic losses.

"The 2025‑2026 season achieved a qualitative leap, officially reaching self‑sufficiency in hard wheat and barley," said Abdelghani Ben Ali, Secretary‑General of the National Professional Council for Grains.

Self‑sufficiency is expected to bolster economic independence and create a surplus for export, while the government plans to raise agricultural savings beyond the previous $43 billion ceiling by 2027.

For the 2026/2027 season, authorities will introduce detailed soil‑analysis maps and update profit margins for farmers to sustain and expand production.
