Algerian Council of the Nation Authorizes Military Deployment to Niger

The Algerian Council of the Nation voted unanimously to authorize the deployment of a People’s National Army (ANP) unit to Niger.
The extraordinary session was called to consider a request from Niger for Algerian forces abroad, following a visit earlier this year by Niger State Minister of Defence Salifou Mody to Algeria. During that visit, Mody signed a cooperation protocol with ANP Chief of Staff General Saïd Chanegriha, aimed at strengthening strategic and security ties between the two neighbours.
The protocol outlines joint efforts to secure shared borders, cooperate against terrorism and respond to Nigerien requests to enhance operational capabilities. Officials argue the deployment is needed to adapt Algeria’s defence policy to new security realities, including trans‑border threats, Sahel conflicts, organized crime, arms and drug trafficking.
The mission is described as a preventive security measure to protect Algeria’s vital strategic interests, linked to broader regional and international security developments. The deployment will be carried out under the terms of the newly signed protocol, with the ANP unit expected to operate alongside Nigerien forces.
