Algerian Court Sentences Two Drug Traffickers to Death
· Source: Algeria Now
Algerian judges in Algiers have handed down death sentences to two men convicted of smuggling and distributing a massive shipment of synthetic drugs, marking the harshest penalty under the country's penal code. The defendants were found guilty of illegally importing 144 kilograms of ecstasy, equivalent to roughly 235,000 tablets, and then selling the substance on the domestic market.
The verdict is based on Law 25-03, which came into force on 1 July 2025 and strengthens measures against narcotics and psychotropic substances. Under the new legislation, the quantity seized is a key factor in determining the severity of the charge, and the 144 kg haul places the case in the highest tier defined by the law.
The law, introduced in the summer of 2025, revises the previous sentencing framework that typically imposed life imprisonment for large‑scale drug offences, now allowing courts to impose the ultimate sanction for leaders of trafficking networks. This sentencing aligns with a broader trend of penal tightening, including recent amendments to the criminal code published in the Official Gazette that expanded the list of crimes eligible for capital punishment.
