Algerian media must adopt proactive strategy against disinformation minister says
Algeria must move from a reactive stance to a proactive strategy to combat disinformation and hostile campaigns, Minister Mohamed Bouslimani said during a radio interview on Wednesday. Speaking on Radio Algérienne Chaîne 3 to mark the 1962 national recovery of public broadcasting, he declared that the country is engaged in a media war that requires rapid, verified information.
The minister condemned external destabilization attempts against Algeria, including regional security controversies in Niger, and called for a strengthened domestic front to protect public opinion from manipulation.
Bouslimani highlighted the essential role of local media due to its proximity to citizens and urged news organizations to adapt to a digital economy. He stressed that digital transformation and professional training are critical for the financial viability of public and private press enterprises.
Outlining the media sector, he noted that Algeria has more than 200 print publications, 142 news websites, 11 public television channels, a national radio network, and planned media support for the 11 new wilayas.
On regulatory and social fronts, the minister announced that application texts for the organic law on information will soon be finalized alongside the establishment of regulatory bodies. He called for formal employment contracts, social protection for journalists, and an end to undeclared work.
Bouslimani also affirmed state support for press outlets and confirmed that preparations are underway with the election authority ANIE to ensure full coverage conditions for national and foreign media during the local and wilaya elections on 28 November.
