Algerian talent Ibrahim Maza impresses Bayer Leverkusen and German experts

Ibrahim Maza, the 20‑year‑old Algerian midfielder, is attracting growing attention in Germany as he becomes a key player for Bayer Leverkusen. His performances, notably a standout display against FC Fribourg where he scored and provided a decisive assist, have earned praise from both club staff and football analysts across Europe.

German football specialist Polo Breitner, who appeared on RMC’s Generation After, highlighted Maza’s importance to Leverkusen’s tactical shift from a 3‑6‑1 to a 4‑2‑3‑1 formation. Breitner said the coach now positions Maza as the central playmaker, often dropping him into the number 8 role to maximise his influence on the game.

Breitner added that the win over Fribourg was secured by Maza and Patrick Schick, noting that the club had been unbeaten before the match. He praised Maza’s technical quality and physical attributes, describing him as a “chouchou” and recalling his earlier days at Hertha in the second division.

The German expert also compared Maza to Florian Wirtz, though he cautioned that it remains uncertain whether the younger player will eclipse his predecessor’s legacy. He concluded that while Maza is already reaching a new milestone, it will take a few more years to fully assess his potential.
