Bayer launches desert corn seed trials in southern Algeria
· Source: Algeria Now
Bayer Germany has begun field trials of new corn seed varieties in Algeria's desert regions, using pivot irrigation to test their adaptation.
The tests, which started in 2026, cover about 5,000 hectares over the next five years and will inform the company's expansion plans across the Maghreb grain market.
Amine Lkima, Bayer's regional director for North Africa, said Algeria is a priority market and the firm aims to become a leader in the corn seed sector.
While the trials focus on assessing seed performance, Bayer has no current plan to build a local seed production unit, though it may be explored later.
