Belgian Court Confirms Moroccan Drug Baron Ran Dubai Operations, Highlighting UAE Property Oversight Gaps

A Belgian court in May 2026 confirmed that Moroccan drug baron Nasr al-Din Trahi directed his drug network from Dubai using encrypted communications, underscoring weaknesses in UAE real‑estate oversight.

Trahi, convicted in Belgium in 2013 for drug‑related offences, received a default five‑year prison sentence in February 2022 for cocaine trafficking, bribery, forgery, money‑laundering and gang membership.

Between 2019 and 2021 he purchased six luxury properties in Dubai for $6.2 million, later selling them for a large profit; however, Belgian authorities were unable to seize the assets despite estimating his criminal proceeds at €5 million.

The Antwerp court’s findings reveal that Trahi managed to channel millions into Dubai’s property market despite his criminal record, a point echoed by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

The case highlights gaps in UAE real‑estate oversight that allow illicit funds to be invested in luxury property, prompting calls for tighter monitoring of foreign investments.
