Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was re‑elected to a fourth term on Sunday, 25 October 2026, securing just over 51% of the vote.

The result puts Lula ahead of Flávio Bolsonaro by roughly 4.4 million votes. Bolsonaro has said he will not accept the outcome and intends to mount a legal challenge.

The election took place after the Supreme Court extended voting by two hours on the day of the poll, a move that sparked debate but did not alter the final count.

Lula’s victory marks his fourth term in office, reaffirming his political dominance despite the contested nature of the result.

Bolsonaro’s planned challenge is expected to be filed in the coming days, signalling a potentially prolonged legal battle over the election outcome.
