Calls for Stricter Road Safety After Series of Fatal Accidents
· Source: Algeria Now
A nine‑year‑old boy was killed by a fruit‑and‑vegetable truck in Eucalyptus commune, Algiers, on 22 October, prompting fresh safety demands.
The tragedy follows a girl being struck by a car on Hassi road in Bir El Arch commune, Sétif, on 20 October, and a spate of school‑related traffic accidents reported since the start of the 2026‑2027 school year.
Nabila Ferhat, president of the National Association of Professional Driving Instructors, said the driving of a school bus must be a specialised activity requiring professional vigilance at all times. She called for mandatory continuous training for school‑bus drivers, regular technical inspections to eliminate dangerous defects, and strict enforcement of capacity limits to prevent overloading.
Ferhat also highlighted the importance of accompanying staff supervising children during boarding and disembarkation and urged stronger road‑safety education for pupils. The recent incidents have reignited calls for enhanced preventive measures around schools.
