CDC Afrique Director Jean Kaseya urged stronger cross‑border cooperation as the Democratic Republic of Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 9,600 confirmed cases and 4,600 deaths, a 48% fatality rate, according to data up to 18 October 2026.

The agency declared the outbreak a continental public‑health emergency on 18 May 2026, prompting regional authorities to coordinate responses across national borders.

Kenya reported nine new cases on 20 October 2026, all among contacts already under monitoring, and its health officials said the situation remains controlled. Nigeria, meanwhile, recorded a new case and placed 44 contacts under surveillance, with further tracing ongoing.

Uganda, which has declared the end of its own outbreak, called for continued vigilance to prevent cross‑border transmission, echoing concerns voiced by WHO Regional Director for Africa Mohamed Janabi, who announced the Nigerian case as the fourth African country this year affected by the Bundibugyo strain that has ravaged the DRC for five months.

African health ministers will meet on 28 October 2026 to discuss strengthening trans‑border response and surveillance in both public and private health facilities, aiming to curb the spread of the disease across the continent.
