China accused the United States on Friday of "sapping" scientific cooperation, saying Washington’s recent university restrictions threaten joint research efforts.

The US Department of Defence announced on Monday, 19 October 2026, that 30 American universities had reduced ties with institutions it deemed to pose national security concerns, including some in China, Russia and Iran.

China’s Commerce Ministry spokesperson responded, warning that Beijing will take "necessary measures" to protect its institutions and criticised the United States for overextending its national security concept.

The spokesperson added that the United States’ actions could undermine mutual trust and called for dialogue, but stressed that China will act if its academic partners are harmed.

The developments come as both sides tighten scrutiny over overseas collaborations, with the US universities’ cuts set to affect ongoing projects while China signals readiness to defend its research community.
