The inaugural Festival international de l’art rupestre d’Algérie concluded in Djanet on Friday, adopting the ‘Déclaration de Djanet’ as a strategic guide for protecting Tassili n’Ajjer’s rock art.
The three‑day event, which also hosted the second international meeting on Tassili n’Ajjer rock art, gathered experts, local officials and the wali M’hamed Moumen, who attended the closing ceremony on 23 October.
The declaration, rooted in the 1972 World Heritage Convention and Algeria’s 1978 historic commitments, highlights climate change, rock‑wall degradation, vandalism, looting and tourism pressures as urgent threats.
It calls for preventive conservation, risk anticipation and resilience strengthening, recommending a permanent inventory, digital database, multidisciplinary research, archimetry and scanning of the sites.
Capacity‑building measures are urged, including training for local guides, surveillance agents and continuous education programmes for communities.
Legislative reforms, community participation and equitable economic benefits are advocated, alongside a sustainable tourism charter, regulated visitor flow and integration of women and youth into the tourism value chain.
The declaration also seeks sustainable financing for site preservation and territorial development, urging integration of its strategies into national and international policies.
