Emergency Passports Limited to Algerian Citizens in Exceptional Cases
· Source: Algeria Now
Algerian authorities announced that emergency passports will be issued only to Algerian citizens who lack a biometric passport and face one of six defined emergencies, the decree states.
The travel document, valid for up to one year and non‑extendable, is governed by decree 16‑58 of 3 February 2016 and applies solely to residents within Algeria.
It can be granted in situations such as the death of a close family member or a court summons, but it does not replace a regular passport and is not a faster version of the biometric passport.
Holders must surrender the emergency passport as soon as they obtain a biometric passport, as the document is intended solely for exceptional circumstances.
Algerian authorities said: "The emergency passport is issued only in exceptional circumstances and must be returned once a biometric passport is obtained."
