Female Judges Near Half of Algeria's Judiciary

Algeria now has 3,153 female judges, making up 49.91% of the judiciary, the highest proportion to date.

The figures show women hold 193 of the 411 seats in the Supreme Court and 31 of 59 in the Council of State. In administrative appellate courts and administrative courts, female representation stands at 58.82% and 58.8% respectively, while specialized commercial courts are 90% female with 27 of 30 judges.

Central administration employs 33 women out of 99 judges, but senior positions remain limited, with only ten female judges among 55 senior posts, a share of 18.18%.

A workshop on women judges was held today in Algiers, organized by the Justice Ministry in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

UNDP Algeria representative Natasha van Rijn praised the progress, saying, "Algeria’s progress in gender equality within the judiciary is a pioneering experience that can enrich international debate". The UNDP‑Netherlands partnership will train 350 female judges and boost their leadership opportunities.
