Former Ambassador Rahabi Warns of US, French Moves on Western Sahara
· Source: Algeria Now
Abdelaziz Rahabi, former Algerian ambassador to Madrid, warned on Sunday that US and French manoeuvres aim to reorient the Western Sahara process.
He said the United States Senate is promoting the Polisario Front as a terrorist group to influence policy, and that Algeria is indirectly targeted as a state supporting a "terrorist group" linked to Iran and hostile to Israel.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet at the end of the month to vote on a resolution concerning Western Sahara and the MINURSO mission, which was established in April 1991 to monitor the ceasefire between the Polisario Front and Morocco.
Algeria continues to back a UN‑led settlement process, despite reservations from the Sahrawi side, and has joined calls to broaden MINURSO’s mandate to include human‑rights monitoring, although those calls have so far failed.
A trend toward dismantling MINURSO, renaming it MINUSO and ending its peacekeeping mandate before May 2027, adds pressure on the mission, while UN Secretary‑General’s personal envoy Staffan de Mistura struggles to stay neutral between the Polisario and Morocco.
Rahabi also noted pressure on Algerian elites to adopt a pragmatic diplomacy aligned with the former US President’s administration, and said Algeria and the Polisario are being asked to bear the diplomatic costs of Morocco‑Israel relations and US recognition of the 10 December 2020 status quo.
