Former French PM Calls for Dialogue with Algeria

Dominique de Villepin appeared on BFMTV’s Face à BFM on Saturday, 24 October 2026, urging a restart of diplomatic talks between Paris and Algiers.
The former French prime minister criticised the hard‑line policy of some French right‑wing and far‑right politicians, saying it fuels tension rather than solving disputes. He singled out Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau’s stance as particularly unhelpful.
De Villepin warned that the unilateral denunciation of the 1968 Franco‑Algerian agreement on Algerian nationals’ stay and employment would be counterproductive, arguing that breaking or challenging existing accords only prolongs friction.
He stressed that migration issues dominate current France‑Algeria discussions and that bilateral negotiations, not unilateral pressure, are essential to address these sensitive dossiers.
The former minister concluded by urging diplomatic engagement to seek compromises, insisting that a confrontational strategy would only extend tensions between the two nations.
