Former Moroccan prime minister Abdelilah Benkirane has drawn severe criticism after questioning whether a Moroccan lawmaker could read the Quran because his mother is Algerian.

Benkirane made the remarks on 26 October, using the lawmaker's maternal lineage to cast doubt on his faith.

The former government leader and his party have faced accusations of hypocrisy for resorting to personal attacks to create publicity, despite having signed normalization agreements with Israel while in power.
