A court in Annaba sentenced former ONAT commercial chief to four years in prison and a fine after a 30‑year fugitive stint in France.

The criminal division of the Annaba court delivered its verdict late Sunday 25 Oct 2026, confirming the defendant’s conviction for misappropriating roughly 800 million centimes between 1992 and 1996.

An audit triggered by an employee complaint on 8 May 1996 revealed an initial deficit of 330 million centimes, which later grew to over 800 million centimes as funds were siphoned from Air Algerie and ENTMV ticket sales into personal accounts.

The defendants, who had previously been convicted in absentia to life imprisonment for embezzlement and document falsification, admitted fraud, falsification and destruction of documents from 1995 onward and said the chaotic security conditions of the 1990s facilitated the theft.

In addition to the main fraud, the scheme included undisclosed bonuses of more than 20 million centimes per employee, further enriching the perpetrators.
