France‑Algeria association head Royal urges deeper economic ties with Algeria
Ségolène Royal, president of the France‑Algeria association, criticized Paris’ approach to Algeria in an interview given yesterday to LCI after returning from a visit to the country.
She said she has led the association for one year and three months and called for stronger economic cooperation, especially in energy and industry, urging France to turn to Algerian gas and hydrocarbons as Germany, Spain and Italy have done.
Royal highlighted the announced project to build an Opel factory in Algeria and contrasted it with the recent closure of Renault’s plant in Oran, adding that such partnerships could help lower petrol prices.
She asked how many Algerian doctors work in French hospitals and said the detained French journalist Christophe Gleizes was in good spirits during her recent meeting with him.
The France‑Algeria association, created after the Algerian war at the initiative of General Charles de Gaulle, continues to promote bilateral ties.
