The French government announced a curfew running from 20:00 to 06:00 on Monday and Tuesday in four municipalities of the Nord department – Lille, Douai, Denain and Wattignies – following violent incidents over the previous weekend. The measure, described by Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu as "partial" and "geographically limited", aims to protect local businesses that were targeted during the unrest.
Lecornu said the decision was taken after a meeting of the inter‑ministerial crisis cell and will be implemented with the consent of the mayors of the affected towns. He added that a state of emergency could be considered if required, but the curfew was deemed the more appropriate response.
The prime minister also announced a specific support fund for the roughly 3,000 shops damaged in the disturbances, alongside provisions for partial activity to help merchants recover.
