France to Deploy Around 1,000 Sentinelle Troops in Paris Amid Gilets Jaunes Protest Plans

France will deploy roughly 1,000 Sentinelle soldiers in Paris on Saturday, 24 October, with half assigned to patrol duties and the other half on alert, the Interior Ministry said.

The troops are tasked with guarding sensitive sites such as the Élysée Palace, the National Assembly, the Senate and the Champs‑Élysées, and are not authorised to disperse protesters. Night‑time traffic restrictions will also be imposed around these locations and major train stations.

In Marseille, similar restrictions will apply to under‑18s from Tuesday night until 24 October, as authorities prepare for unrest that follows the recent wave of demonstrations across the country.

The Gilets jaunes movement has announced a march from Place de la Bastille to the Opéra, calling for President Emmanuel Macron’s resignation. The Interior Ministry reported 2,397 arrests and 997 police and gendarmerie injuries – seven of them severe – during protests on 17 October, and about 3,000 shops were damaged by looting in Paris, Marseille and other cities.

Italy is also preparing for Saturday protests, with the government planning to send 500 soldiers to Milan. Local police and gendarmerie will handle frontline duties, and Medef president Patrick Martin has warned merchants against arming themselves. No closed‑door events have been reported, and neither country has announced a general curfew.
