French Government Plans Massive Police Deployment for Saturday Protests

20 Oct 2026 · Source: Algeria Now

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday that a large-scale police presence will be deployed for the protests scheduled for Saturday, aiming to address the shortcomings of the static deployment on 17 October that saw widespread violence and looting, according to AFP reports.

Lecornu told the National Assembly that the Interior Minister has already issued directives to prefectures to ensure the upcoming operation is "massive" and more mobile, reflecting a revised doctrine on resources, personnel numbers and rapid response capabilities.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuész added that the new strategy will focus on increasing the volume of forces and their agility to counter groups that deliberately disperse police units in a highly coordinated manner.

The enhanced deployment is intended to "impact" these organised groups and prevent the repeat of the chaotic scenes that marked the previous protest day.
