A funeral ceremony on 20 October honoured 47 security personnel who were killed by ISIS in 2016, their bodies having been recovered from two mass graves at Hamam al‑Alil near Mosul.
The caskets, draped with the Iraqi flag, were displayed on a city square in Mosul before being taken to the ceremony, underscoring the continued impact of the decade‑old atrocities.
Dhurgham Kamel, deputy director of the common graves department, confirmed that the victims had been executed, adding that the graves were part of a wider network of burial sites linked to the group’s campaign.
Among the families present, 46‑year‑old professor Ibrahim al‑Jubouri received the remains of his cousin, a reminder of the personal loss that still haunts many Iraqi households.
The ceremony comes as the United Nations estimates that more than 200 mass graves, containing up to 12 000 bodies, remain undiscovered in Iraq, while authorities have identified roughly 290 graves from the Saddam era since 2006.
