Gendarmerie warns of fraudulent phone calls targeting card details
· Source: Algeria Now
The Gendarmerie nationale issued a warning on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, alerting citizens to fraudulent phone calls that impersonate officials and request card information. The alert, released today, included a video illustrating how callers claim to represent the Gendarmerie or other official bodies and ask for card numbers, secret codes or OTPs received by SMS, which actually grant access to financial accounts.
The message stresses that neither the security forces nor postal services ever ask for card numbers or secret codes over the phone. Victims are urged to hang up immediately if approached and to report any suspicious calls to the dedicated line 55‑10.
The warning follows an earlier call for witnesses concerning a suspect who used the emergency number 112 to carry out fraud. Authorities stress that the OTP sent by SMS is a key to a financial account, not merely a numeric code, and must be protected.
