The international conference on transboundary water protection opened in Tlemcen on Monday, bringing together representatives from 26 countries and 19 experts to address severe pollution of the Oued Moulouya and the Boughrara dam.

The gathering aims to find solutions to contamination caused by waste from 400 industrial units in Oujda, Morocco, where chemical concentrations have exceeded international standards by 400 times.

A film highlighting the major pollution risks was shown, after which the conference president urged cooperation over borders to tackle the crisis.

The rector of Tlemcen university stressed that international coordination is essential, while the wilaya of Tlemcen SG called water protection a national security priority.

Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced the creation of an African water cooperation association to sustain joint efforts across the region.
