Iran Says Baghdad Will Expel Iranian Kurdish Opposition Members

Iranian ambassador Mohammad Kazem Al‑Sadegh announced on 20 October that Baghdad has agreed to expel or hand over members of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups operating in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The decision emerged from a joint security commission meeting between Iranian delegates and Iraqi officials, following discussions at Iraq’s national security council with the Kurdish regional delegation on 19 October.

The move builds on a 2023 border‑security agreement between Baghdad and Tehran, which neutralised Kurdish opposition, halted Iranian bombings of Kurdish groups and led to the disarmament and relocation of those groups to camps within Iraq.

Al‑Sadegh said, "Baghdad agreed to expel or hand over members of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups," confirming the implementation plan will be coordinated with Kurdish regional authorities.

The agreement marks a further step in the 2023 accord’s effort to stabilise the border and reduce tensions between the two neighbours.
