Israeli Election Leaves No Clear Majority as Coalition Talks Begin

The Israeli Knesset election held on 27 October 2026 closed at 20:00 local time, delivering a fragmented parliament with no bloc reaching the 61 seats needed to form a government.

Preliminary results show the Likud camp winning 52 seats, the Netanyahu camp 50 seats and Arab parties 18 seats, falling short of the majority threshold.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid said the Netanyahu camp suffered a "crushing defeat, the public sent a clear message", while Democratic Party leader Yair Gallant added that many people have dismissed Netanyahu's government.

Unified Arab list leader Mansour Abbas expressed optimism, stating, "We hope to reach a 61‑seat majority to form a new government" and signalling potential coalition pathways.

Analysts note that several coalition leaders are blaming National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir for the defeat, underscoring internal tensions as parties negotiate alliances.
