Ministry of Health expands specialized medical studies access in southern wilayas

The Ministry of Health has eased access to the specialized medical studies diploma (DEMS) for public sector general practitioners working in 30 southern and High Plateau wilayas, raising the maximum age limit to 50 years.

Under measures following a joint ministerial instruction dated 22 October 2026, the required professional seniority has been reduced to two years. In return, admitted practitioners must commit to serving at least six years in their home wilaya after completing their training.

A ministry correspondence sent on 27 October to health and population directors across the affected wilayas specified that candidates must be under 50 and active in service at the time of the competition. The measures cover wilayas including Adrar, Laghouat, Biskra, Béchar, Tamanrasset, Djelfa, Ouargla, Tindouf, El Oued, Ghardaïa, Naâma, Timimoun, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Ouled Djellal, Béni Abbès, In Salah, In Guezzam, Touggourt, Djanet, El Meghaïer, El Meniaa, and several High Plateau areas.

Practitioners admitted to the programme will maintain their salary, indemnity scheme, and incentive benefits paid by their home establishments.

Beneficiaries must sign a contract with their original establishment agreeing to return after training and serve for at least six years. Doctors who interrupt their training for non-pedagogical reasons or professional incapacity must reimburse all training costs, while those failing to complete their required service period must repay training expenses and the amount corresponding to remaining unserved years.
