Namibia Reaffirms Support for Sahrawi Self‑Determination at Angola Bilateral Meeting

Namibian Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Selma Ashipala‑Musavyi reiterated her country's unwavering backing for the Sahrawi people's right to self‑determination and independence during a ministerial session of the Namibia‑Angola mixed bilateral commission in Luanda on Sunday.

Addressing the agenda on conflicts, geopolitical tensions and their impact on peace, development and small‑economy challenges, Ashipala‑Musavyi called for continued African efforts to resolve disputes in line with the African Union's Agenda 2063 vision of a peaceful, prosperous and integrated continent.

The statement echoes Namibia's long‑standing position in international fora, including a reaffirmation by President Netumbo Nandi‑Ndaitwah at the UN General Assembly's high‑level debate, where she urged the UN to pursue a just and durable solution for Western Sahara and endorsed the mandate of the UN Mission for the Referendum (MINURSO).

Namibia previously underscored its support during a June meeting in Windhoek with Sahrawi Foreign Minister Mohamed Yeslem Beissat, highlighting historic ties of friendship and solidarity between the two peoples.

The minister stressed that Namibia's stance is rooted in its own liberation experience and its commitment to international law, the UN Charter and the African Union's founding act, which reject colonialism and affirm peoples' right to self‑determination.

The Namibia‑Angola commission, convened to deepen cooperation on trade, investment, infrastructure and other shared interests, provided the platform for the renewed affirmation of Namibia's position on the Western Sahara issue.
