Netherlands Withdraws from Eurovision 2027 Over Israel Participation
· Source: Algeria Now
The Dutch public broadcaster NPO announced on Tuesday that the Netherlands will not send an entry to the Eurovision Song Contest 2027, citing sensitivities surrounding Israel's participation.
NPO media director Jurre Bosman said Israel’s participation elicits various reactions in society and causes discussion and division, adding that the decision was taken after consulting the board of broadcasters.
Executive chairman Jet de Ranitz expressed disappointment but confirmed the contest will still be aired on public channels in the Netherlands, stating: “Due to the sensitivities surrounding the themes currently at play, we have decided to take a step back for the time being.”
The withdrawal follows similar boycotts by Iceland, Spain, Ireland and Slovenia of the 2026 edition, and mirrors AVROTROS’s earlier boycott of that year, which it deemed non‑neutral.
NPO’s move means the Netherlands will not participate in the 2027 event, although the competition is scheduled for next year and will continue to be broadcast domestically.
