New Road Code Makes Expired Vehicle Inspection a Fourth‑Degree Offence with 10,000 DA Fine

Algeria’s new road code law n°26‑09, published in the Official Journal on 17 May 2026, classifies fines into four degrees and makes driving with an expired vehicle technical inspection report a fourth‑degree offence, attracting a fine of 10,000 DA, the highest level in the scale.

Under the law, authorities may retain the driver’s permit until the fine is paid, although electronic payment on the spot releases the permit immediately. The driver then has 45 days to settle the amount, and may continue driving for up to 10 days if presented with the agent’s document.

If the fine remains unpaid after the 45‑day period, a court will double the penalty to 20,000 DA. In addition, a vehicle lacking the mandatory inspection report can be immobilised pending compliance.

The new provisions aim to enforce the mandatory administrative document for road use and tighten compliance with vehicle safety checks across the country.
