Nigeria Confirms First Ebola Case, Diplomat in Critical Condition

Nigeria has confirmed its first Ebola case, identifying the Bundibugyo strain in a diplomat whose condition has deteriorated to multiorgan failure, health officials said on Thursday.

The patient arrived from Uganda and was admitted to a private hospital in Abuja before the virus was diagnosed. Ali Pate, Nigeria's Health Minister, said the diplomat was hospitalised prior to the confirmation of Ebola.

Olajumoke Babatunde, director of laboratory services, told reporters that three molecular tests verified the Bundibugyo strain, marking the first detection of the virus in Nigeria.

The confirmation comes as the Democratic Republic of Congo grapples with its 17th Ebola outbreak, which has recorded over 9,000 cases and 4,381 deaths. Kenya, meanwhile, reported its ninth Ebola case recently, underscoring the regional spread of the disease.
