The Panama Canal logged a new record of 521 million tonnes of cargo in the fiscal year that ran from 1 October 2025 to 30 September 2026, according to official data released on Wednesday.
During that period 14 000 vessels transited the waterway, with the United States and China together accounting for roughly five percent of global maritime trade that passed through the canal. Daily transits rose from an average of 36 to 41 in early 2026 as ships were rerouted around congestion in the Strait of Hormuz, before falling to 32 in early September and edging up to 33 after rainfall eased conditions.
The surge in traffic broke the previous record of 518 million tonnes set in the fiscal year 2022. However, the canal’s reservoir levels have been strained by an El Niño‑induced drought, lowering water supplies for the lock system.
Ilya Espino de Marotta, chief executive of the Panama Canal Authority, said: "The impact of El Niño was only felt in the last four months of the fiscal year".
The authority is monitoring water availability closely and will adjust operations as needed to sustain the increased cargo volumes while managing the drought‑related challenges.
