Paris riots erupt following high‑school protest, police impose curfew

Riots broke out across Paris on Thursday, 22 October 2026, sparking fires, looting and vandalism after a high‑school protest over ignored grievances.

The unrest quickly spread through streets and boulevards, with incidents ranging from arson to widespread looting and vandalism, prompting authorities to impose a localized curfew in the affected districts.

Police identified the majority of participants as French nationals, chiefly youths from neglected suburban areas, and found no evidence linking the rioters to undocumented migrants or any specific ethnic group.

In an unrelated incident, the mayor of Limoges reported that a bell tower was set alight, a damage not connected to the Paris disturbances.

French political leaders have defended the curfew as a necessary measure, warning that the turmoil threatens freedom of expression and assembly, while no official statement on future reforms has been issued yet.
