Pentagon Signs Deal for 850 F-35 Fighters

The Pentagon finalized a decade-long framework agreement with Lockheed Martin on 22 October 2026 for at least 850 F-35 Lightning II fighters. The contract guarantees a floor of 850 aircraft over ten years, including spare parts, adaptation equipment, and fleet maintenance.

Under the terms, Lockheed Martin will maintain a continuous production rate of 156 aircraft per year. The manufacturer is also required to invest a minimum of $7 billion in industrial and logistical enhancements for the F-35 program.

The agreement is subject to validation by the U.S. Congress and requires matching budgetary credits before it can proceed. Congressional approval remains a critical next step for the deal.

Michael P. Duffey, U.S. Undersecretary of Defense for Warfighting Development, stated that the department has fundamentally changed its way of stabilizing the U.S. defense industrial base to produce quickly and at scale.

A Pentagon statement noted that the agreement will strengthen and modernize the U.S. F-35 fleet. The framework aims to ensure long-term stability for the airframe's supply chain and operational readiness.

With the deal now subject to legislative review, officials will monitor the budgetary process in Congress. The final implementation of the 850-aircraft commitment depends on the successful passage of the required funding.
