Police disperse Lyon protesters with tear gas over cost‑of‑living grievances
· Source: Algeria Now
Police deployed tear‑gas on Saturday morning in Lyon as demonstrators gathered near a university building and the local police station, attempting to block a main road over the cost‑of‑living crisis.
The area was declared prohibited for demonstration by authorities after the administrative court in Paris rejected the organisers' appeal against the route imposed by the police prefecture. The prefecture had set the march route from Porte d'Italie to Porte de Vincennes, replacing the previously permitted Bastille‑to‑Nation path.
Demonstrators, including Gilets jaunes, trade‑union members, high‑school and university students, continued their marches across France on 24 October 2026, demanding higher purchasing power, protection of public services and fiscal and social justice.
The police action in Lyon underscores the tension between authorities and protest groups as the government faces growing pressure to address economic grievances nationwide.
