President Tebboune Orders Immediate Measures to Stabilise Prices of Basic Goods
· Source: Algeria Now
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced a series of emergency actions aimed at curbing price increases and ensuring the availability of staple products across the country. Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Sunday, Tebboune instructed the government to develop a legal framework that will tightly regulate intermediaries between producers and consumers, and to launch an immediate inquiry into the role of certain importers and butchers in inflating meat prices and creating regional price disparities.
The president tasked the prime minister with investigating allegations that some importers are monopolising imported meat and selling it at prices comparable to local meat, while also examining price gaps between butcher shops in different wilayas and neighbourhoods. He also directed the interior ministry, in coordination with regional governors, to create a mechanism for purchasing local surpluses, storing them and releasing the stock to the market at the first sign of price volatility, in order to protect citizens' purchasing power.
A separate decree was given to the Ministry of Trade to devise a price‑cap system and set profit‑margin limits for vegetables, legumes, pasta and meat, taking into account the entire production and distribution chain. The plan includes a decentralised monitoring network, whereby trade directors under the authority of the walis will track daily local prices of widely consumed goods.
To reinforce enforcement, the president ordered an expansion of the price‑control brigades under the Ministry of Trade, with daily field inspections throughout the year. He also called for a coordinated effort between the interior ministry, the Ministry of Trade and the High Commission for Digitisation to build a digital database that will serve as a rapid‑alert system, enabling authorities to intervene swiftly when abnormal price spikes occur.
These measures form part of a broader seven‑point strategy unveiled by Tebboune to address recent sharp increases in the cost of meat, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas and apples, which have affected Algerian households over the past months.
