Rear Collision on Madrid‑Andalusia High‑Speed Line Leaves 46 Dead

A rear‑end collision between Renfe AVE train 2080 and Iryo service 6076 near Urda station on the Madrid‑Andalusia high‑speed line has killed at least 46 people and injured 179, officials said on Wednesday.

The AVE 2080 left Madrid‑Atocha at 08:00 carrying 397 passengers, while the Iryo 6076, with 146 passengers and a baby on board, was travelling the same route when the two trains struck at 08:54 at kilometre 118. Two rear wagons of the Iryo train derailed, fell down a slope and four wagons overturned, blocking the line.

Adif, which manages the network, described the event as a rear collision and suggested a possible human error by an Adif operator after a failure of the main signalling system forced a switch to manual mode. No further details on the cause have been released.

Renfe has opened a crisis cell to assist victims' families, and Spanish Health Minister Mónica García said the priority is to evacuate the injured quickly, adding that no information on the cause is available yet.

The accident comes amid a heated political campaign ahead of the legislative elections scheduled for 29 November, recalling a similar 2021 collision in Adamuz, Andalusia, which also resulted in 46 deaths and more than 100 injuries.
