Algeria’s Directorate General of Forests will kick off a massive reforestation drive on Sunday, 25 October, coinciding with National Tree Day.

The initiative, supervised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, will cover 47,917 hectares across all wilayas and aims to plant 38.8 million seedlings, including 27.45 million trees of forest, fruit and pasture species.

From 2023 to 2026, 42,376.36 ha were planted, adding 1.4 million olive trees and 1.1 million carob trees; this year the programme also includes almonds, figs, chestnuts, cherries and pistachios to support rural agriculture.

Activities will target schools and surrounding areas and feature public awareness drives. The campaign seeks to restore ecosystems damaged by past fires, combat soil erosion, desertification and climate‑change impacts, and prioritise species adapted to local conditions to improve carbon capture and storage.

Directorate General of Forests spokesperson urged participation, saying: "We invite citizens, associations and economic institutions to join the activities organized by forest prefectures."
